PROMT Freelance 9.0 offers unique features to achieve the desired quality of translation. Dictionary databases included in PROMT Freelance 9.0 have been organized according to a new principle: now they are grouped into profiles, which makes it significantly simpler for the user to select the resources of the system to translate specialized texts. The profiles include dictionaries and Translation Memory databases. In addition, users can enable their own dictionaries and Translation Memory databases to PROMT Freelance 9.0 at any time. When working on a translation, users have all the necessary lexicon and terminology pertaining to the subject of the text at hand. This expands the possibility for choosing the needed lexical meanings and terms and greatly increases translation accuracy. The combined settings created by the user can be saved as new profiles, in addition to the profiles that come standard with the system.

• Integrating the Translator into Microsoft Office
PROMT Translator tool or tab is added to the applications of the Microsoft Office 2000–2007 suite. This allows you to translate documents directly in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, and Microsoft PowerPoint.

• Translating Web sites
You can translated foreign-language web pages directly in Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. The translator plugin can translate a selected portion of a Web page or a Web page in its entirety. The original formating will be preserved in the translation along with all the URLs and images on the page.

• Batch file translation
Use PROMT Batch Translator to translate several documents at once. The application will create a document queue, each with its own translation settings. This will save you a great deal of time, because:
—you don’t need to open each file to assign translation settings to it;
—documents are translated in the background;
—alongside the translation, a TMX (Level 1 and Level 2) TM database is created, which you can use later for working with similar documents.

• Translating messages in instant messengers
Instant messengers have become an important tool in business communications. PROMT Freelance 9.0 can be integrated into the four most popular instant message clients: ICQ, QIP, MSN Messenger, and Skype. The messages you send and receive can be translated by pressing a key combination directly in your chat window or in a separate window, depending on your preferences.

• Translating PDF files
PROMT Freelance 9.0 can be built into Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat Pro. The translation will be displayed in a separate window without retaining the original formatting of the document. In addition, you can translate PDF documents in PROMT Translator or PROMT Batch Translator. You can then save the translation to an RTF file.

- Statistics of using terminology in texts
- The automation of the search for terminology in texts will help you process large volumes of documentation.

• Enabling specialized dictionaries from PROMT Collections
A collection is a set of specialized dictionaries for various subjects and fields of science and business, combined into profiles. Using collections you can update the basic dictionary of the PROMT application you have installed with specialized lexicon and terminology, which will improve the quality of translation.

In addition to dictionaries, profiles also include Translation Memory databases and other translation settings. Choosing and installing the desired collection or selected profiles from it will tune the application to accurate translation of terminology in texts from specific fields covering specific subjects.

Note, however, that collections are purchased separately and cannot be used without PROMT software.

• Entering dictionary entries from a file

For accurate translation of highly specialized texts we recommend creating your own dictionaries.

Users who already have their own glossaries can now use them to quickly create user dictionaries for PROMT Freelance 9.0. The process of converting glossaries into user dictionaries is fully automated. To add new entries to a dictionary you can choose from two editing modes: Simple (with the dictionary displayed as a table, where you can add a new term and its translation) and Advanced (intended for users with more sophisticated linguistic background), which offers a number of additional features. For collaboration on translation projects, the system offers a complete set of tools for working with PROMT dictionaries.

With these tools you can:
—obtain statistics for dictionary contents;
—edit dictionary properties;
—compare dictionaries;
—merge two dictionaries of the same translation direction.

• Creating Translation Memory databases
You can store translated texts in the Translation Memory database and retrieve them later. This saves time in translating similar documents (contracts, technical documentation, etc.)

Человека не должны заставлять делать то, что должна делать машина (например, сборка шариковых авторучек), но машине нельзя доверять того, что должен делать человек. Например, перевод художественной литературы. Иначе в результате рано или поздно появитя очередной "меч предназначения"...

Kozlina 25.07.10 | 21:49:25 Это не извращение, а профессиональный инструмент переводчика. Художественную литературу системами САТ-памяти переводить невозможно, это никто и не делает. Такими софтами переводят инструкции, каталоги, многие другие виды технической литературы, где есть много повторов и сложное форматирование (презентации) и т.п. Кроме того, удобно искать термины.

sergium 26.07.10 | 00:38:37 Kozlina - быть может Вы удивитесь, но переводят с помощью компьютерных программ также художественную литературу, еще как! Я владею на разумно-литературном уровне четырьмя языками и многие книги читал на разных языках, как правило оргинал и перевод или оригинал и два перевода на разные языки. И такую галиматью иногда встречал, что просто руки опадают, да и не только руки. Когда я читал польский перевод книги "Эрагон" Криса Паулини, я только удивлялся - этот мальчишка так топорно написал или же переводчик спартачил? Когда прочитал по английски вынужден был признать, что язык автора тут ни при чем, написал как надо, а вот перевод... Не верю, чтобы человек разумный, грамотный, допускал такие ошибки, это должен был переводить робот. Наверное, я все-таки несовременный, потому что искренне считаю - или знаешь язык достаточно хорошо чтобы переводить "врукопашную", в крайнем случае пользуясь словарем одиночных слов, печатным или компъютерным, или просто не берись за эту работу.

Kozlina 26.07.10 | 22:15:09 sergium, не удивлюсь, т. к. этим зарабатываю. Художественную литературу (хорошо) переводит один из нескольких тысяч переводчиков. Надо просто переписать книгу (поняв смысл) своим языком, да еще сочинив стиль как бы писателя. Вот простой пример из детства. Наверно, Вы читали "Остров сокровищ" Стивенсона? Татуировка на руке Билли Бонса: "Here's luck". Перевод бездарного сына Чуковского: "На счастье". Вторая "Billy Bones his fancy" - "Да сбудутся мечты Билли Бонса". Ужоссс. Слова попугая: "Stand by to go about." Перевод: "Поворачивай на другой галс". На самом деле это целая хохма, как хулиганы обучили попугая самой мерзкой команде на парусном корабле - приготовиться к повороту оверштаг. Конечно, тут Промты не спасут. Но технический перевод - запросто.

sergium 27.07.10 | 23:26:56 Ну, примеров можно найти великое множество не только в художественной литературе (кстати, полностью с Вами согласен относительно ее переводов, хотя особого преступления в переводе "Острова сокровищ не вижу"). А вот "изюимнка" из области технической литературы. Пистолет со свободным затвором (хотя бы Макарова) по английски, а точнее по американски, называется blowback. А "переводчик" перевел это на польский так, что более или менее соответствовало бы русскому словосочетанию "дунуть в зад"... Крррасотаааа, Билли Бонс тут и в подметки не годится...
